Grieving

Today I Have deadlines to keep and a small child to care for, a house to clean and dinner to cook. But right know, this second I'm taking some time to grieve. I'm Sad to say this morning we woke, to learn our dog Millie had died in her sleep. She was not sick, in fact she was up and around yesterday playing her favorite game of "Tear up a piece of plywood" and came for her pets and hugs before going to nigh-night.  Millie, had in fact reached the age of old.
8 1/2 years ago, just after Justin and I got engaged, we got Millie as a tiny puppy that fit in the palm of my hand. She was the very first puppy I ever had. We named her Dooley, after Vince Dooley , Justin's idea but I thought it was cute. She rode home in my coat pocket, limp and sleeping, all soft puppy fur that I couldn't stop touching. I couldn't believe we had just gotten her, our first "Experiment in Parenthood" together.
When we got home with her, Marla and Livie didn't like the name. Said it didn't suit her. So as a family we sat down and finally decided on Millie. We all took turns holding her and playing with her. She nipped Marla's lip and got in BIG trouble, she never did it again. Justin held her away from him under her front legs, so get a good look at her and she fell sleep like that in like 2 seconds. I was one of the cutest thing I had ever witnessed. Livie found toys to tease her with. Millie liked "Attack the squeaky toy". She came to me to rest and sleep on my chest.
She loved to play catch a ball, attack a rock and chew on it, attack the sprinkler or water hose, catch and tear up a stick, and many others. She just loved to play.  It was not always perfect though,we found early on she has food allergies from the corn in dog food. We put her on the B.A.R.F.  Diet . I cook for my dogs 3 to 4 times a week. Millie did better on oatmeal over rice, and raw chicken gave her a sour stomach. Flea medicine gave her hot spots. Once, when she was a puppy, she ate Justin's speaker wires. She liked to be the boss of all the other dogs and got her self into trouble more than once with her attitude. We're pretty sure she had a mild case of hip dysplasia, there where a few days after a rough running and playing day she would wake up unable to stand. Those days I carried her out to potty and lay in the sun before bringing her back in. Those days scared me every time.  All her teeth got filed down flat from her love of "Chew that rock". We tried to make her stop but we couldn't brake her of it. She just loved her some "Chew the rock".
I didn't know last night would be my last with her. I wish I had cuddled with her on the floor for awhile, petting her coarse fur, feeling her warm body  as she breathed. I wish I had hugged her one more time tight around the neck and told home much I loved her and what a good girl she was. I wish I had kissed her wet nose like I did when she was a puppy.  I didn't do any of that last night. I brought her in from her dinner. Gave her some pets, let Coleman pet and tell her "my friend, ok" then she went nigh-night to our room. I don't know when she went in the night. I didn't know it would be my last night. I'm so very sad, I'm crying as I write this.

To my Millie girl,
This morning when we realized you had gone, as daddy was getting ready for work, I was so sad. So very sad. I wrapped you in a sheet, and daddy and I carried you out side. He had to leave for work, he was as sad as me, I could tell. I told Livie that you had past, she misses you too. Papa came to help me bury you. I put you under the Turks cap. I hope you'll like it there it's sunny in the spring ans shady in the summer, and the chicken like to hang out there, and I'll be able to see you from the window, make sure your not up to no good.
I love you so much Milberts, and I'm gonna miss you dearly.
love always,
Momma

Thrift Store Make-Overs

So, by now you ladies (and lads) know my favorite store is a thrift store.  I'm always looking for cool vintage or odd pieces to add to my closet. Sometimes those pieces need a little updating  or "fixing". here are a few of my more resent finds and there "make-overs":
Baggy peachy-pink sweater
I had loved this color as soon as saw it. originally I was hoping it had some wool in it so I could felt it (all the tags had been cut) but alas it was not and I was stuck with an ill fitting sweater.
But now I have the perfect peachy-pink cardigan!
Long, High Waisted, map print skirt.
looooooooooved this print and the shape, hated the waist and length.
Now, I have a very cool yoga waist, map print skirt that falls just below my knee.
I love the contrast with the berry colored jersey(which is also from the thrift store. I think I paid .10 for about a yard of this material) and thread. Most comfortable skirt ever!
Plain Brown Swing Jacket.
Really there is nothing wrong with this jacket. I love the shape and the way it wears on me. It was just to plain for my style.
Now it looks like a piece of chocolate cake trimmed in cotton eyelet lace. I also switched out the buttons for vintage fabric covered ones. A yummy little snap to any outfit!
Vintage 50's Style Dress
The top of this dress is in a classic 50's style but I'm pretty sure it's from the 80's. Whenever it was made someone loved to wear it, you can tell from the condition of the button holes.
To bring this up to date, I shortened the skirt by about 5 inches. To cover the damaged button holes I attached the floral strips over the button plackets. I can still button up from the back but they are now covered. For a finishing touch I added the square of lace over the pocket.  When I tried it on of Justin, I got a big thumbs up for my hard work :)

Woven Felt Baskets

Finally getting this one up! OK here we go..................
What you'll need to do this project:
1 1/2yards 36" or bigger felt off the roll. (the grey basket was 36" and the blue was 72")
scissors/rotary cutter and cutting mat
sewing machine
thread
1. So to start, cut your felt into 2" strips. For my baskets I used a ten strip base with 3 or 4 wall strips. Since I plan using them for utility purposes around my house and not just to sit and look pretty, I took 2 strips and top stitched them together to make them stronger. So in total I cut 28 strips to ended up with 14 doubled strips for the project.
2. once all your basket strips are prepped lay out the first 5strips flat on the table going one direction.
3. From the middle of you first 5 strips weave your first strip over, under, this is the center of you basket. Then on both sides of that center strip weave two more strips in to the base for a total of 5. Laying flat on your table, push your strips together from all sides to tighten the weave. I wanted mine very tightly woven so I pushed and worked the felt till there was almost no gap between the felt strips, but not so much that they bunched together.
4. Your next strip will be the first of your wall rings. take your strip and lay it out on your base. pin it size, and trim. Use the trimmed strip to measure out your other wall rings. one all your rings are trimmed, over lap them about an inch and sew ends together . I used a zigzag stitch on mine.
 5. Now your ready to start weaving! Start by folding every other strip into the center of the basket. Then pull the remaining strips through and fold them over the ring. Once this is done place your next ring on top. Flip the strips in the middle, out over the second ring, then flip the strips from the bottom of your ring into the middle of the basket, before adding the next ring. repeat process until your happy with the height. i had 3 ring in the grey and 4 on the navy .

6. Fold and pin your strips over 2 sides of your top ring. From the other 2 sides gently tug your strips to help tighten your weave, before folding and pinning them over the top ring also.  Trim excess before top stitching your basket. Again I used a zigzag stitch for this.
for the handle take your last strip you cut ( or some of your longer trimmings for small side handles like the navy basket.) and pin it to on toe side of your basket. attach with a zigzag stitch. repeat on the opposite side.
And your done!

Hopefully this was helpful, and you'll be making felt baskets out the wazoo, but if you have any questions or comments feel free to leave them below.
